Choose a Team Name

Activity 11

This Task Matters

A team name is small and symbolic, but it does something real. It gives you a shared identity, something to belong to. When you call yourselves something, you stop being a group of individuals who happen to work together and become a team.

Theory

A team name strengthens identity. Choose something that connects or inspires you — humor is welcome. The key is that everyone can see themselves in it.

Team identity is more than a name — it is the values, language, and self-image that integrate individual members into something coherent. After ten activities of building shared understanding and personal connection, you have the raw material for a name that carries real meaning. The process of choosing together is itself an act of sensemaking: what do we value, what do we find funny, what do we want to be known for. A team name that everyone can see themselves in becomes a social orientation point, a small but powerful ritual that reinforces belonging.

Outcomes

I understand how a shared identity strengthens belonging and gives a team something to rally around.

Reflection Questions

  • Does our team name feel like us, or did we settle for something safe?
  • How did the process of choosing reveal what matters to us?
  • What does it change to refer to ourselves by a name we chose together?
