Hold a Joke Competition

Activity 33

After three levels of serious structural work — conflict, stress, values — a joke competition might seem out of place. It isn't. Humor is how teams build the emotional resilience to handle everything else. The playfulness from Activities 5-8 comes back here, but with more depth because you now know each other much better.

Theory

Humor relaxes and connects. Choose a format where everyone gets a turn. Keep it respectful and laugh together, not at each other.

Informal relationships are the foundation of team trust, and shared humor is one of the fastest ways to build them. When you laugh together, you create a positive shared emotional experience that signals safety, belonging, and mutual understanding — the same psychological safety that made the deeper work of Levels 7 and 8 possible. A joke competition is a structured intervention disguised as play: everyone participates, no one is the target, and the format gives even reserved team members a safe frame to be vulnerable. The jokes that land tell you something real about shared values and the culture you have built together.

Outcomes

I understand how play and humor create resilience and strengthen team connection.

Reflection Questions

  • What made me laugh hardest, and what does that tell me about what this team values?
  • How did it feel to be silly together, and where did I feel resistance?
  • How does humor change the way we handle the hard stuff?
